im interested to hear what Doc has to say about the "bowie" knife, could it be?
Thanks for sharing this Lon!
Bob
I've not seen the smaller of the two knives shown. The larger of the two appears to be "The Musso Bowie". Does anyone know who made either of these knives or are they still unidentified?
Gary
Thank you, Mr Collins!
Frankly, neither of those knives will find much traction amongst antique bowie enthusiasts. There's one great knife in Collins' collection (the Sam Houston - Thomas Airey knife) but the book he put out last year is loaded with items accompanied by provenance that is impossible to verify. To put it another way, the donation is a generous gesture, but the collection could have been built with a more critical eye. The book addresses this issue and if you search the internet you will find a lot of discussion about individual items and the collection as a whole.
So far as I know the supposed "Jim Bowie knife" -- which would be the Musso knife -- is not included in the donation (the illustrated knife is another of similar form, but I think even Musso has discredited it.) Someone please correct me if it is in fact included.
Mark, I went back and re-read the article...this is the caption under the photo-
Phil Collins holds a Bowie knife that belonged to Jesse Robinson who fought under Jim Bowie at the Battle of Concepcion and the Siege of Bexar in San Antonio
