Tomorrow night(Oct. 10th) on PBS at 8pm Central, on NOVA: ABS Mastersmith Kevin Cashen will be on the program helping to craft a viking sword. I love swords, so I will be setting my DVR. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thank you for the plug, but I should probably clarify my involvement so that those hoping to see very much of me are not left wondering. I started as a consultant for some of the information for the show, but had my reservations about some of the conclusions that the story line drew, as always I am all about factual information and I can never seem to bring myself to give, even an inch, on that. I was very happy when I heard that my friend Ric Furrer was the smith they had got to do the filming, but what I didn't know is that Ric had insisted that I assist him in the work. Think about that- how many people do you know when they have a shot at the national TV spotlight would immediately think of sharing it with a friend? It was a gesture that I will never forget.

Anyhow, I agreed to help, mostly for the opportunity to see how these things are done, but I was firm that Ric was the star and that I was just there to help if I could. So you will see me running the bellows and assisting in hammering but for the most part I hung around with the grip off camera prepping sword stuff while she prepped lighting. It was an education to be sure. Part of it was incredibly impressive how they can use camera angles alone to create scenes that I couldn't imagine, or even see until the playback, on the other hand it was also a bit like watching sausage being made. I am very curious to watch and see final edit and how much of my unnecessary and ugly mug they left in.

I have had this one on the calendar. So I have my comfy sofa ready and am interested in seeing how they present it. They did a good job with the japanese sword program. And of course having Kevin possibly in the show makes it a must watch.

Unfortunately I don't have my TIVO rigged up to anything to get the recording off of the box.

The program was not bad. Very interesting , especially the smelting furnace. I bet they wishtheycould have used the big air hammer there in the shop. Good show.

Cheyene, the show on japanese swords was originally aired in 2007 on Nova. You can view it online at the website or order the dvd.

I enjoyed it. I bet it inspires a few folks to make a sword.

I would also like to add my thanks to Kevin for this video. I got an email about the video from my local blacksmith group even before I found anything posted here. I thought it was a great video by both Kevin and Ric. Kevin, do you go along with the video and believe that the original high carbon steel from 800-1000 a.d. used by the Vikings came from the area of Iran?
