My friend Fred gave me a worn bearing from a very large pump that I cut open today. The outer and inner races are very hard steel. I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what the center holder race could be made of. It is brass in color but, does not seem to have the weight of brass. It cut like aluminum but, is the color of brass all the way thru.

I plan to forge one of the other pieces flat, then try to harden it to do a file test to see if it will harden to the point I can make a knife out of it. Another friend, Carlos, told me he has forged the balls together and mak a knife from that steel. the balls are about 1.25" in Dia.

If anyone knows what the center race could be I would appreciate the help.

Edit: Photo does not show brass color, taken with my cellphone.

The bearings I have seen with that in them it was brass, or maybe some brass alloy. you can heat it and forge it into guards or pommels tho.

FORGE ON!!!

Some that material is oil impregnated brass or bronze. I have no idea what it does when it gets back up to fotging temp. Good luck.
