Hey Bladesmiths,

Thought this was kind of a whimsical, fun idea. I know the style is not to most people's taste but it may give you some ideas. The stock is 1x3/8 W2 and it has 3/8 holes slit and drifted. The forward hole has a tenoned and fullered guard, and the hole at the butt is empty.

A fun project!

Cheers,

Nick

I like it it looks cool but it looks heavy. Are you going to put scales on for the handle or just leave it like that.

Hey Jared,

I plan on poking the middle part of the handle full of holes to cut down on the weight. It will get rayskin panels with cord wrap over that. I think the balance will be pleasing when it's done.

Very unique. How big is it...length & thickness

While this style may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is unique and demonstrates creativity and excellent smithing skills --a very good combination. It looks like you achieved your goal on this design which is as important as anything. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Very interesting knife Nick. Of course it is going to have a hamon? I look forward to seeing it done.

Sounds cool and challenging to do! Not sure I understand it though. Any better close up photos?

Thanks Brian, Brion and Phil.

It's like a 6" blade I think. It will get hamon and the blade will be ground in the style of Bob Lum. I don't have any more pics, but she is headed in to heat treat today. I will try to snap some more. I will measure the tooling too if you guys want to try. I had to practice like 10 slits in mild steel before I attempted it on the W2.

Hey fellas,

A little update. Heat treated and finish ground. There's hamon in there!

G'day Nick

That is fantastic. Anyone who has ever hot slit and drifted will understand just how neat a trick it is to do it the hard way in something that is 3/8" by one.

Great to see outside the box stuff, especially when it is well done

Cheers

Shawn
