after going to the hammer-in at Piney woods and watching carefully ,thought i would start off with forging the point. not real sure what color to look for ,but i believe i got it way to hot. after striking the steel a few times the whole thing twisted . now , no wanting to do this again can any body help me out with this . thanks
The point needs to be bright orange. Jim Crowell showed us how to do it in one heat. Takes me four. If it twist just hammer it back. When it gets dull red back into the fire. It took me a while to get it right. Use a hammer that you can control. Better forge slower with care than to beat up the blade. It will save you time when grinding.
Hello James. Pretty much as George states. The steel needs to be orange to bright orange for the point forging and other forging. It just takes practice. It will twist on you if your hammer is not perpendicular to the steel, but that is correctable. Proper hammer weight for you and proper angle, about 45 degrees to the steel are important.
