Hi folks- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I made another video that shows how I hand finish blades in my shop. I wasn't sure where to post this, because I'm very reluctant to call it educational!!! And it does have some gadgets in it that you may not have seen before.

It might be helpful or of interest to some. Might be total garbage to others! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//tongue.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Thanks fellas!

Thank you for sharing this Mr. Wheeler! I like the knife fixtures that you've made. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

What type of lubricant do you suggest for hand sanding?

Thanks Wesley- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Oh, please just use "Nick"... I don't understand this Mr. stuff. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//huh.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

You can really use just about anything, but I usually keep the blade sprayed down with either Windex or Simple Green... kind of a "6 of one, half-dozen of the other" type of thing. Whichever one is closest I guess. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I also use WD-40, in a needle tip bottle (so it doesn't get sprayed everywhere).

IMHO, you essentially just want something that will help keep the paper from loading up with crud so fast. You can sand dry, in fact I do sand the clips that way, because it's easier for me to see where I'm at.

Some guys just use water with baking soda. Any of these are an improvement over straight water, as they do not welcome rusting our simple carbon steels so quickly. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thank you Nick. After watching the video a phrase from the first Batman comes to mind, " Where does he get all those toys?". Great video. Keep em coming.

Dan- I finally figured out what I was doing wrong trying to embed videos. The youtube links copied/pasted directly here were an https..... once I kicked that "s" off there, it was good to go. Glad I didn't have to come crying for help again! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Brion- HaHa, I literally laughed out loud at that! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks guys- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks Nick. Watched it on BF the other day. Glad you posted what lubricants you use as I thought you were using Windex. So do I understand correctly these lubricants will not cause rust?

I would like to start wet sanding as I would like to keep the dust down when ever I can.

Thanks Scott- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I hate to flat-out say they won't rust, cuz sure enough if I do, they'll rust up on you. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

But in my experience, you can spray a blade down with Windex or Simple Green and just let it sit... and they don't rust. Do that with straight water (especially here in the Rainy... er Pacific Northwest <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> and a simple carbon blade will rust up pretty darn quick. I have found that the cleaners react with some types of masking tape and will actually etch into the steel. That's part of the reason I very rarely use tape on my blades anymore.

This brings up another nice thing about the Rhynowet paper. It's aluminum oxide, which typically can't be used wet... but the Rhyno loves working wet or dry.

Hope that helps. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
