Thanks Ed, This is and area I need the most improvement on. I've been attempting this method with limited success. practice, practice. The 2" nick is what gets me,lots of hand sanding to remove.

Ed,

Thanks for the video...very nice! I am thinking about moving to a ceramic or glass platen liner because I feel like my steel platen is limiting me---my platen is flat (checked with a straight edge at all angles) but my J-flex belts just will not lie completely flat on it (two vertical "humps" running most of the length of the platen). I've tried everything I can think of and have improved it but cannot seem to eliminate it. Can you share any info on what type of ceramic or glass to get, your source for it, and whether it is worth the effort?

Thanks for any help,

Ed C.

There are times that I have jumped over the plunge and marred up the ricasso.....GGGRRRRR! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

If the blade will accept it geometrically, you could clamp on a file guide and save that ricasso! And in some cases, a file guide will help in getting things even.

Ed, go to http://www.hightemptools.com/ceramicplatenliners.html.

I also think I got my last one from Tracy at http://usaknifemaker.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=platen.

Either one will work fine.

That was a great video. Thank you for it. I got my motor and me wheels and spring. I get my steel on Friday. I could weld it all up and be grinding by next week but I want some variable speed. I don't have money for a VFR but I do have some step pullies to pull off my grandfathers non working drill press. Now if I could only pound out something resembling a knife.
