Lately I've gotten a lot of communication from individuals who are learning how to grind, or having issues grinding. I always ask if the person's grinder is set to the proper height....and find that most don't even realize there is a "correct" height for a grinder. Since it's difficult to describe in words, we put together this short little video to demonstrate. Hope it's helpful!

I've got a few adjustments to make. Thanks for the video.
For some reason, I cannot see any video or link to one.

It sounds like you might have some settings in your browser that's not allowing the link/video to be seen. If you have an ad blockers active, that can cause the issue too.
Here's a link to the video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i5d4-s-Fnc
If you can see that link....copy/paste it into the URL bar of your browser and see if that works.

Thanks Ed. I don't seem to have problems on other sites with embedded videos. I had found that video by searching already.
It seems like this is really geared toward folks who freehand grind, (without a work rest). I always use a work rest unless the piece is so big that it becomes easier to go freehand. Either way, the height of the grinder is paramount and set to the individual user.
I learned a very different technique for grinding while using the work rest. Different methods I guess.

You're right Joshua! It's intended for those who freehand grind. The only time I use a work rest is when I profile...everything else is done freehand. I've tried all the rests, jigs, and other things for grinding blades, and always found them "limiting" in one way or another.....and so I finally "sucked it up" and took the time I needed to learn freehand grinding. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thank you for taking the time to make this video Ed. I had mine set too high and it did not feel comfortable/natural/. I kept telling my wife that I almost feel like I should be standing on something. I will make the necessary adjustments.
You're very welcome Tomas! It's such a simple thing.....but it's always amazed me at how many Knifemakers, both young and old, are totally oblivious to just how necessary it is.
