Hello,
Ive been needing a round wheel but cant afford one at the time, I was wondering if anyone has build one before? Im thinking of using a CNC table at work to cut out some MDF then glue the parts together, Plasma cut a rim and run bolts through to hold everything together more safely. Ive seen them used as a hone on a bench grinder so I was thinking I could modify that to be 2" thick then use it on my KMG
My only concern is that the wheel might explode on me so I was wondering if anyone here had some ideas on if this is a sound thought or have ideas for materials to make one that I havent thought of yet.

Ive come up with a better, less dangerous idea. Ill post pictures as I go to show anyone interested what Ill do.
Whenever somebody talks about "building" a contact wheel, it makes me very nervous. Over the years I've seen several incidents where folks where injured, some seriously because a "homemade" contact wheel flew apart during use. I'm gona take a stance here and tell you DON'T. If an individual where to build a contact wheel the "correct" way, by the time it was completed, it would end up being more expensive to build, then to buy. Save up, and purchase a contact wheel, you'll be much safer, and money ahead in the end.
If you don't know about them, check out Sunray Corp. They are great folks to deal with, and provide custom made wheels for less money then most commercial outfits.

Thanks Ed! I hadnt heard of them before, Ill check them out. I agree with you, the idea was a terrible one, I thought the same would happen after some considering and opted to just wait to get a proper wheel. Ive been talking to a local machining company that a friend owns about getting some large and small radius platens made as well.
