Hi all, Ive been using norton black ice SC 9x11" sheets for hand sanding, but they wear out fast, a couple strokes and the paper is spent, especially at higher grits. I am wondering what everyone here uses? i saw the hand sanding topic of the month, great thread, but not much mention on brands of sandpaper used. i think MS Brion Tomberlin mentioned he uses norton on lower grits and swithces to 3m imperial on higher grits, but whats everyone else using? i hear good things about Rhynowet paper but is it worth the extra expense? Thanks in advanced for any and all answers.

I use the 3m 10x upnto 320 grit and rhinowet 400 and up the 3m works better dry than the rhinowet, and I prefer to sand dry lower than 400.

The rhinowet is amazing paper it cuts like nothing else I have used. I did an entire L6 sword with one sheet of 400!!!!!

If you are specifically asking about hand sanding operations, I almost exclusively use 3M micron belts in 60m, 40m, 30m, 15m, and sometimes 9m. I sand wet with Orange Degreaser or Simple Green as a lubricant. These are 2"x 72" belts that I split into 1"x 72" strips using a little jig I made. Most of my sanding sticks are based on a 1" width.

If I need a more flexible backer in very fine grit, (say 1000 to 2000) I use a silicon carbide paper backed sheet (available at most automotive stores) or loose SC abrasives on a piece of denim cloth with a little Simple Green for lubricant.

The Rhynowet sheets are very good and last. Get them from Supergrit.com You can buy them in packs of 10 sheets if you just want to try some different grits. They start at 80 grit all the way to 2500

Rhynowet Red sheets. I use them on my disc, and use the cut offs for hand sanding. No waste 🙂

Yup, I do this same thing. I saved up money and bought some various grits in the larger sleeves. This was after I got to do a shop visit with Bruce Bingenheimer and got exposed to the Rhynowet. Love the stuff and it was SO much better than the hardware store stuff I'd been using.

I first heard of Rhynowet sandpaper when Nick Wheeler said that he used it. The old saying,"Well if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me". So I gave it a go. The stuff was so much better than anything else I have ever used. No body wants to hand sand more than they need to. I use Rhynowet from 80 grit to 2500 grit. I cut each sheet into about 2 3/8" wide with an old school paper cutter and place them in a 3 drawer plastic container.
