Hi all!
I spent the day with Dan and Sally Cassidy at their ranch in Salida, CO. What an extremely nice and accommodating couple!
One of the topics that came up during our stay (since I'm finally getting around to taking my first "stab" at my JS presentation test) was the best and safest method/mode to get knives safely to the Blade show. I've discussed this previously with Ed Caffrey and Bruce Bump but I tho't I'd open this up for some more ideas if that's okay. I recently bought a break down shotgun case that locks and was thinking about adding my wife's 22 revolver to the mix so that it would remain locked while on the plane. We also discussed just FEDXing the knives to the hotel but my problem is we have to leave right near the end of the last day and I'd have no way of getting them shipped at that time.
Any ideas?
Best regards,

Hi Dana,
I sent mine on the plane in a break down shot gun case also. When checking in with these ask the TSA guy or gal to please use a little TLC.
One thing the airline does not tell you. Once landed in Atlanta that case may not come at the baggage carousal. Most likely it will be at the oversized baggage area. That is what happened to me 2 years ago. You might ask ahead of time. Just to save you some stress.
Take Care Pal.

Hey Bing!
Thanks for that bit of valuable info. I think I'll give Southwest a call as well to make sure how they handle stuff like this. I may even call DIA to get the scoop.
Are you going to be there in Atlanta?
Thanks buddy!

Dana, I would love to be there to congratulate you on the JS. However I will not be able to make the Blade show this year. Wishing you and everyone the best.
Take care

Whenever I go anywhere with my knives (such as the Spring Piny Woods hammer in) and I don't want to get them messed up I do this.....
A long time ago we were going to burn an old rifle case (the kind with that soft fluffy stuff in it) but I took the time and effort to crack that thing open and get that velvety fluff out and then I cut it into several pieces that are about 16" by 7" each. Now, whenever I want to go some where with my knives I just wrap each individual knife like a burrito in that stuff and then pack them tightly into my display case.
I wish I could be going to the show but right now being 1 of 9 brothers and sisters, it would take a miracle to get there.
Eaven so, I hope everyon who goes will have a great time and I wish my luck to those who are going before the judges to earn there JS or MS stamps (hope that will be me someday).

Dana,
You already know how I do it, but I will share so that others might benefit from it too.
I purchase a larger "hard case"...the kind used for transporting camera equipment. Mine is a 3-layer deep Doskocil, but any of the brand such as Pelican, Otterbox, etc. can be used. Since 911, the airlines will only allow a container to be locked if there is a firearm in it. To that end, I have a little 9-shot .22 revolver that goes to each knife show with me. I pack all my knives in the case, and on the top layer place the .22 revolver. When I walk up to the check-in counter at the airport, I openly declare that I have a firearm in the case. It must be visually checked by TSA, then I MUST padlock the case. I keep the key, and in most situations, that bag receives special handling. This past Jan when I arrived it San Antonio for the ABS show, the case was hand carried from the plane to the Delta baggage pick-up area, and I had to show the person my ID to gain possession of the bag.
You can also add extra insurance if desired, which ensures that the bag gets "special" treatment. It costs me an extra $35 each way to take my knife case (an extra baggage fee), but at least I know that nobody can get to my knives without a set of bolt cutters.
I've been traveling to the Blade show for YEARS....and every year someone who chooses to put knives in their luggage, reports knives being stolen/missing. I simply cannot fathom why anyone would put custom knives in luggage that ANYBODY would have access to. Forget the TSA locks! They might be OK for your personal luggage, but anybody at the airport, can easily get through one of the those, and to whatever is inside your luggage.

Hi Ed!
The more I've been looking into trying something different the more I think I'll stick with your suggestion. I was going to use Sandy's new 22mag revolver but I might just go by an old piece of junk revolver somewhere and stuff that in the case.
So, after you declare that you have a firearm in the case do they have you take the case to the TSA folks or do the folks at the counter pass it to them and then you follow that case to the TSA station, and that's where you install your lock? I think I call the Southwest counter and ask what SOP is.
I ended up with a nice Winchester case like Bing's that will easily handle all the knives (JS ones and others for sale) plus a revolver.
Thanks buddy!

I got the same advise from Ed many years ago and like Ed, I have never had a problem. I use a very cheap black powder pistol.
It depends on the airport as to what they do. My local airport just hands me the tag right at the counter and I put it in the bag right there.
In Atlanta, the TSA is going to want to see it -- at least they have always had me go to the back room and open my case. The best part is that you are required to be present -- after all, you have the keys <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> .

Thanks Brian!
That's what I be doing for sure. I called Southwest and they said exactly what you did about the process. Unfortunately, I don't have an old revolver and will have to use Sandy's new 22mag revolver:).
Thanks again, Brian,
