I keep running into overheating issues well using my budget grinder to get an edge on my blades as I like to have them sharp beforehand sanding (hay Japanese polishers work sharp blades, so I am not too crazy in this) and am thinking of getting an A Tormek or Jet as I specifically want something with a VSD so I can slow it down well learning to use it. I am wondering what I should look for in a machine like this.
Note: I don't want to spend a couple thousand on a better grinder till I can eather get a bigger shop or get my current one re-wired for 220 volts as again I want that VSD.
Hey Kevin, I have a WEN water cooled sharpening system. It's a knock off of the Tormek. It has one speed, but is slow enough not to cause any heating issues. Depending on what you're looking for I think these sharpeners have merit.
If you have blades that terminate at a plunge without a sharpening choil, then wet wheel sharpeners may not be for you... they will gum up that transition. If you have a sharpening choil or are sharpening a bowie... then you're in good shape.
As far as performance goes, I think they will put a "working edge" on a knife. Which is a rough 220 grit edge that you can easily shave with. If you want to work up to a finer grit after that I think hand stones would be the next operation.... or if you have a tormek, they have multiple wheels to go to.
It takes practice and some jig modifications to get an even bevel all the way up to the tip as well.
So far I like mine, but they do have limitations.
Cheers,

Here are some additional pictures to show what I meant about jig modification.
The first one was my solution and the other two are from the guys on the tormek forums. A little fancier mouse traps for sure!

thank you for answering I have been very ill for the last 5 months it was not covid...but I did have what the doctor thought was a rare presentation of pneumonia, as I was coughing for 4 months, then last week I got a nasty ear infection so its not been my year. yet despite only really being able to get up to forge for a few hours a week, I still somehow managed to forge then toss in the scrab bin about 7 little skinners, and the 8th is almost finished just some handle work and spine repolish. I have too high a quality standard for my own good =( I have been trying to make and 2 boning knives. Both were (for free) commissions my uncle gave me and I need to get those finished in time for deer season. Got on to the point I just need to hand finishing the handle and repolish the tang, then just need to polish and mount the boning's handle. Sorry for whining I needed to get that out of my system.
I have watched a few of your videos on youtube my handle is Gundanium and you have answered some of my comments over there so I want to say thanks for that too. I actually got the idea to pick up a Tormek from your video on the nock-off. I kinda have a hit-and-miss record of getting a defective product when I order knockoffs or with my old cheap wen tools sanders (i actually got electrocuted by one of their 4 by 36 grinders.) so given that there's all that wet stuff I picked up the Tormek and am glad I did. I went with the T-4 and it also only has one speed, however, thanks to the Interrupter gear which is the VSD it's slower than what I saw on your video, which is nice because it does not spray water around so I can use it in the house which is nice as winter is just around the corner and it gets to -22 were I live. It does drip water but I think that's because I am doing it by hand instead of using a jig for it. I am just getting ready for bed as I was up most of the night last night so I have not checked them out quite yet but I will in the morning.
If you have not you might want to drop about 30-40 get a tormek SP-650 Stone Grater for your Wen, it allows you to dress the stone so you have either a 250 grit or 1000 grit finish. and its worth it. I will check out those jigs in the morning, right now I am just free handing. i need sleep (yawning emoji here) Insomnia sucks. s
