This is more of a question. I am wanting to make a sword that will be doing heavy chopping. I three types of steel and was wondering which I should go with. 1095, 1075, W2. I was leaning towards W2, but never have used it.

Thank you

Does anyone know a good book about the different types of steel. From what I was reading I guessed W2 since it had validium and titanium in it. I know for a fact I am wrong do to the two people that replied lol. Kevin for sure hands down the metal guy. Thank you

http://www.hybridburners.com/documents/verhoeven.pdf this a good place to start.. if you are anything like me you will not understand it the first time but it will get you closer to the right questions to ask. for tools steels another book i found help full is https://books.google.com/books/about/Heat_Treatment_Selection_and_Application.html?id=ZYtTewAACAAJ

the unspoken part of your question I why both Kevin and I suggested 1075 over the other steels.

speaking for my self , it is because 1075 is an inherently tougher steel. both 1095 and w2 are capable of much higher hardness and can be great knife steel but are not inherently tough like 1075, for the same reason 1084 would be a good choice as well.

I think a better steel choice for a sword is 5160 , 9250 , 6150 even 8670 these are all steels that are designed to be tough and stand up to repeated flexing and shock all things a sword needs.

Over all I feel the best sword steel available is L6 but only if, one you understand it well enough to work with it (l6 can be fickle .. ) and two have the equipment to properly heat treat it other wise it is one of the worst choices you can make.
