Hello all, I recently have had a request for a meat cleaver with approximately a 3" wide blade. I don't keep homogeneous steel in that size range and was planning on doing some forge welding to get to the dimensions I need. My question is if it would be better or easier to use a bit design like making an axe or hatchet or to go with like a 5 layer approach all carbon steel. Keep in mind that I don't have a power hammer or a press available at this time.

Go to a spring shop. They will probably have some 3" by 3/8" 5160 they use to make truck and trailer springs. I bought a piece 3" by 6'for 30 bucks. Sometimes they have drops.
