I am redesigning what i had planned on making for the test and am now considering putting in a forward curve into my test knife and am wondering how that would be measured. By this I mean is it 10 inches in the vertical direction from or must I have only 10 inches of steel?

The definition is pretty straight forward in its meaning:

"Maximum ten (10) inches from point to the beginning of either the guard, bolster, or handle of the blade."

I would measure a straight line from the front of the guard or bolster, or the handle material if no guard or bolster is used, to the furthest forward end of the blade. A straight line.

Thank you (gives a nod of respect) for clearing that up for me because I have always taken things very literally so I was not sure if it was a straight line or only be able to work 10 inches regardless of any curvature and given the nearest master smith is 800 miles from me, I really do not want to have to make that journey twice for the JM test if I can help it.
