I just purchased a new anvil, and want to get it setup to begin forging. I've read differing opinions on dressing the edges on a new anvil. Some say you have to dress, some say you don't. What are the opinions for bladesmiths?

Thanks for any advice.

Casey

With that anvil, the first thing is to decide which direction you're going to face it..... generally a person who is right handed faces the horn to the left, and vice-versa if you're left handed.

Personally, I like to have the edge closest to me "sharp", and a portion of the edge furthest away to be radiused (2-3" is the amount I have radiused, from the horn end back)......how much depends on individual needs/desires.

Congrats Casey on your new Anvil. Your post was perfect timing as I also had a new anvil delivered yesterday. It is a Rigid Peddinghaus model 9, 165 lbs.
