What does a museum quality fit mean? Can some one show me examples?

Hmmm, that term is so subjective that it doesn't really have much meaning. I have seen the finest examples of craftsmanship and fit in museums and I have seen absolutely terrible examples of fit in a museum. Neither held much value over the other when compared to the historical significance the piece held. A great example would be many old bowie knives that were rather amateurish efforts, but that is irrelevant to what battle they saw, or what hand once held them. I have seen old swords that would be considered a prank on the Journeyman judges, and I have seen ancient blades that our Mastersmiths can only scratch their heads and wish.

Thank you for the reply. It’s just that I see individuals saying that their knife has museum quality fit up and I’m trying to wrap my head around what that may be.

Dave,

That's when the handle material is left a few thousands proud around the guard and/ or spacers. This allows a little room for handle movement, such as shrinkage.

If you'll look through the gallery, you should find examples.

I have heard that type of fit, which I like very much, referred to as a heirloom fit or heritage fit, this would be the first time I have heard the term "museum fit" applied to it. While I really like the method, I don't understand the moniker at all.

new member here, so new guy question in regards to specifics. I understand shrinkage and leaving allowance for it, what if a guy stabilizes every thing before getting it mounted ? I stabilize any wood I mount or I have refused to use it thus far. Genuine question guys.

That's very good insurance.

My personal advice there is to use stabilized wood only from those professionals with a proven track record.

But be advise that even stabilized wood will move.

I stabilize here, not so keen with the color variations I see folks do that is stunning. I do feel secure in the process however. I am using a 12cfm 2 stage pump and stick fast solution thus far. I will keep it in mind that it can move, I am guessing over time perhaps. So with that factor is it still a need to fit the pieces in same way or is closer tolerance / lines considered acceptable. I really am asking these things in Ernest since I joined the ABS to actually become a JS so I understand some areas of thought & application are going to have to shift to be in line with that.

I understand exactly your meaning, I spent my day with a young man I have been working with in other areas to help for a few years now having him help me today. Back and shoulders are a train wreck so needed the second set of hands today making a low layer billet. I bumped his arm and reminded him he is starting to understand what kind of hand work goes into these things when one does not have a press. He mentioned noticing the material loss and work etc as well in our process. We are going to use some of that to put a decent blade in a folder frame for him, it will mean more to him that way having had a hand in the making of it vs buying on the end of the line and just grinding it. Those are honestly some of the priceless moments for me, showing folks the beauty of personal investment and appreciation 🙂

I dig the simple and clean lines on this knife Karl, given the goldsmith back ground I sometimes feel the over embellishment is to distract for poor fitting. SO clean and simple shows of proper fitting work in my mind.
