I just bought a cheap buffer rake so i can dress my mops, but I am hesitant to use it in its current condition (see picture) and am wandering if i should take the time to make them more pointy.

I will bite, what is a buffer rake?  if its for you mop to straighten the strands I would use it as is.  Otherwise I think it could snag and start tearing the strands. (but this is the opinion of someone completely in the dark)

It served the same purpose as a dressing stick for a Bench grinder or Tormek: to even outwear in the mop.
