As you probably know, Howard is well known in the knife and sword world as one of the most knowledgeable on such subjects. Point being? Steel selection is always a serious consideration for a given project. While some will serve just as well, there are times when a type of steel will be better or increase you odds of success. Again, experience will prompt such questions.
