Hello,

I live in upstate NY. Are there any Intro To Bladesmithing classes I can sign up for this year that are in reasonable driving distance?

Thanks,

Nick

It looks like the closest School to you with a class, would be Haywood Community College, Clyde, North Carolina.

Intro to bladesmithing class, Oct. 3-14, 2016. Instructor - Jim Crowell.

The New England School of Metal Work in Auburn, Maine is just finishing their class and I do not see any more listed for the year.

You can find this info on the Home page. Click on schools at the top.

Hope this helps some. I do not know how far you would want to drive.

Can a more local mastersmith get approval to teach the class to a one on one session?

Hello Nicholas, a mastersmith can teach you many things and if you can get one on one time you would benefit greatly in your learning curve. However, an actual ABS approved Intro to Bladesmithing course is offered only at approved facilities with approved Mastersmith instructors to insure standards and informational needs are met. That being said the main difference would probably be the one year that you can deduct from your waiting period as an apprentice before testing for Journeyman. Any competent Mastersmith should be able to help you immensely and get you to journeyman level, but only approved instructors, at the approved facilities, can get you the class paperwork that will shave off that extra year.

ABS Hammer-Ins are also very useful learning experiences and this is the next event at the New England School of Metawork in Auburn, Maine.

Nicholas I know that there will be an intro class at the New England school the first two weeks in November. Jason Knight is listed as the instructor.

Nicholas, that class is full from what I hear. You would need to call the school and get on the waiting list.

Nicolas,

You may want to contact Joe Szilaski. He is a Mastersmith, who lives in Pine Plains, NY. Joe has knifemaking classes at his shop. I don't see where Joe has a basic class scheduled in the near future. But it would be worth your time to make contact with him, as he is in your area.
