Can someone clarify what this "Lab Class" is?

I'm seriously tempted to take the Handles & Guards class again, if Jim is going to be teaching it this year also, it was insanely good last year.

Give Bill Wiggins a call at (828) 226-2551 and he can answer your questions about the Lab Class at Haywood Community College. Bill is the ABS Coordinator for Haywood. Please post what you learn about the class on the ABS Forum.

Who all is attending the Basic School in March? I will be there hopefully . This will make my second basic class, I enjoyed the first one so much I thought I do another one. I had almost a year pass before I could get my shop up and running after the first class. Now my shop is good to go. I think it will be great to gain the insight of how other instructors go about making thier blades. plus this makes a great vacation for me, where I actually can get some work done without my little guys worrying me non stop.

Michael,

Greg Neely will be teaching the first week of the class, and I will be teaching the second week, although I will likely be present for the whole two weeks. My wife Haley will be there for the second week as well. She is a Journeyman smith, and will also be able give insight.

I think you will really get a lot out of the class, having already taken it once, and got your shop running. Keep in mind that it is an intro class, but it is being taught by experienced ABS Mastersmiths, so you will be able to learn to any level that you are able.

I think you and Greg may share some common ground with his background in law, and will likely get on very well. I am also excited to be there and get to know you and the other knife enthusiasts!

Looking forward to a great class!

Adam.

Adam, Thanks for the reply. Im looking forward to meeting you, Greg and Haley. I am a fan of knives by all three of you guys so I am pretty excited about the class. I spoke with Bill Wiggins and hes getting me the name of some of the hotels there to stay at. I wanna be somewhere decent without breaking the bank. The first intro was great but I hadnt really ever made a blade so I was a little behind the curve. I feel much more confident about things now as I have been forging and finishing a few knives. I think the class is going to help clean up any hiccupps I may be making. See you all in March.

Hi, Javan.

Basically, the lab class is a week of study pertaining to anything related to a fixed-blade knife. Some like to use it as a review for forging/grinding techniques, basic damascus questions, handle and guards, etc. It's basically whatever you guys want it to be. In a lab class, I usually have four or five projects going. A lot of times, students will sit in on the instruction pertaining to something other than what they came to see. There's a lot to this business, and a million questions to match. This is a hands-on class, by the way. Sorry, no folders here.

Hope this helps.

Leaving for HHC tomorrow night headed to the "Design and make your own Dooms Day knife" Instructor, Jason Knight, MS class. Leaving a little early so I can do a little shopping before class. Planning on stopping by Sheffield Knifemakers Supply (Orange City, FL) and Kayne & Son (Canton, NC) before class.

Looking forward to seeing all my NC ABS friends that I can while in North Carolina.

I love it there.

If only I could get all my family to agree to move up there.

Thanks Mr. Neely for responding, it does make sense, and sounds like a very interesting format for a class.
