I am planing on making some canisters for the first time soon and realised I forgot to order white out and seeing as its around 5 bucks for a single bottle and is also hard to poor, does not store well and is stinky as all heck. So having a hunch, I decided to look up liquid paper on wikipedia and see if I could find a ingredient list so i could figure out what magic allows this substance to prevent said fusion, and i found the ingredient list. Low and behold the first listed ingredient is Titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide is the single most common Pigment used for white paint.
as canister damascus canisters need airtight to prevent loss of carbon you can sped 5 bucks for one bottle of white out containing 20 ml of liquid, or for the same you can go to walmart's arts and crafts isle and get 2-5 bottles of water based, white acrylic paint that contains 2 ounces of liquid that is easy to poor, far less stinky, stores very well, and will make far far more canisters than you could possibly imagine. =).
I was right it worked surprisingly well as the ingot fell out after i got the top off. however i cracked the thing.
You're exactly right Kevin. I use cheap, white spray paint. $.99 a can and it dries a lot faster <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
High Temp stove paint would probably work also. Once I start playing around with some canisters. I will give it a try.
I remember seeing someone just use a paper towel and it worked too. It created a ash layer that prevented the welding of the can to the bar. He just cut off the end and the bar fell out.

Not sure about white paint but BEWARE! ! "White Out is flammable. So don't try drying the canister with the forge.
