At the ABS Board of Directors meeting held on May 30, 2013 in Atlanta an updated Conflict of Interest Policy was presented to the Board and after a brief discussion a motion was made by Director Dan Cassidy and seconded to adopt the below policy. The motion to adopt the attached Conflict of Interest Policy passed with all Directors present voting to adopt.
The purpose of the conflict of interest policy is to protect the American Bladesmith Society's tax-exempt interest when it is contemplating entering into a transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of an officer or director of the Organization or might result in a possible excess benefit transaction. This policy is intended to supplement but not replace any applicable state and federal laws governing conflict of interest applicable to nonprofit and charitable organizations.
This is a copy of the ABS's Conflict of Interest Policy and Conflict of Interest Statement signed by each Director and Officer on the ABS Board of Directors.

Since 501c3 organization's tax returns are public documents, how about posting the ABS' most recent 990 federal tax return on the forum? Thanks.
Tom
You are correct in stating that the American Bladesmith Society, Inc. is a 501C3 non profit corporation. The American Bladesmith Society, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Maryland and we have been granted 501C3 status by the IRS. Our Form 990 Federal Tax Returns are stamped "Open to Public Inspection". The reasoning is that because nonprofits serve important public purposes, nonprofit organizations are granted exemption from most federal, state and local taxes, and donors are granted a tax deduction for contributions to 501C3 charities. Along with these privileges comes the responsibility to provide details about their operations to members of the public.
We have made the procedure for obtaining a copy of the IRS Form 990 available to the public through the following notice posted on the ABS Website under "Frequently Asked Questions"
How do I obtain a copy of the IRS Form 990 for the American Bladesmith Society?
A copy of the IRS Form 990 for the American Bladesmith Society, Inc. is available by writing American Bladesmith Society, Inc., P.O. Box 160, Grand Rapids, Ohio 43522 or by calling (419) 832-0400.
I see your point and in addition to the procedure above for disclosure to the general public I can make arrangements to post our IRS Form 990 which is a public record in this section of the ABS Forum for our ABS members.
The requirements in State and Federal law for non-profits is continually changing and to make sure that we learn of the changes and stay in compliance I made a motion at the recent Board of Directors meeting in Atlanta that the ABS join the Maryland Nonprofits organization. The motion was discussed, received a second, and passed with all Directors present voting in favor of the motion. We are now in the process of applying for membership.
