ABS Store

Hi, I have met many of you at events I have attended with my husband, Journeyman, Butch Sheely and hope to meet many more at future events. I have been handling the ABS store merchandise for several months now and have very much enjoyed all the contact with members while doing it.

The store is well supplied with books and DVDs ready for you, the most popular is the "Handles and Guards" book by Master Smith Joe Keeslar, if you don't have it you should.

.

DVDs include 3 by Moran, "Making a Knife", "Handle and Guards", and "Damascus". We also have a 5 DVDs done at hammer ins, so if you missed Kevin Cashen on the Quillion Dagger, Dan Peterson on knife design, Don Fogg on Damascus or Greg Neely and Bert Gaston on ABS judging you can get the DVD.

I have recently placed an order to replenish our stock of shirts and hats, so let me know if you need anything and to save shipping I can bring things to events you plan to attend or send them to events I won't be attending. We have changed to Made in the USA garments and hats so you can be proud of your purchase.

This year I will also handle your pre-registration for the events, so if I can help in any way be sure to let me know. You can help me out by sending in you pre-registrations early.

Thanks to all of you for making this a fun job.

Hi Cindy,

I bought a copy of Joe's book at the ABS symposium/hammer-in in Maine last summer. I then proceeded to leave it on the plane upon my return to Hawaii. I hope to someday replace it so I can actually benefit from it! What little I read of it looked great. I'll check out the old (for now <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmiths.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />) website to see about the DVDs you mentioned.

I'll be attending the hammer-in in Maine again this summer. (My folks live in NH.) How should I go about preregistering?

I see there will be a handles and guards class following the hammer-in. I have a few questions regarding it.

[list]

  • Is it possible to attend it if one hasn't taken the bladesmithing course?
  • Are there any scholarships available I could apply for? (I'm a high school metalsmithing teacher of modest means; and have never received a reply from two previous applications submitted in previous years. BTW, the application forms on the old ABS website are quite out of date.)
  • Scholarship aside, is it possible to arrange a payment plan for ABS courses?

Well, I guess that's enough of an earful for now.

    Thanks so much, Phil

    Phil:

Good to hear from you in Hawaii. You can pre-register for the New England Hammer-in that will be conducted in July in the Store when the new website comes online. There is a place to pre-register for ABS events.

You can attend the “Handles and Guards” class even if you have not taken the Introduction to Bladesmithing class. You should contact the New England School of Metalwork about any payment plan that they may have. The only scholarship that Dan could find that would be work for the class and school that you want to use it at is the following:

A $500 scholarship will be given to a paid attendee at the following ABS sponsored Hammer-Ins during 2010:

Great Smoky Mountain Hammer-In, Clyde, North Carolina

New England Bladesmithing Hammer-In, Auburn, Maine

Mid-America Exposition in Troy, Ohio funded by Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil

The recipient of this scholarship will be drawn from a hat at the named event. This scholarship can be used at the Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas, Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina, or the New England school of Metalwork in Auburn, Maine.

    Thank you,

    Cindy
