My question refers to the addition to the requirements of having at least 2 6" blades and that all knives must have bolsters or guards. My question is in Reference to the last part. I would like to make an integral (with hidden tang) but I am unsure if that will meet the requirements with out a separate bolster.

Matthew, I read the rules just to see what you are seeing.

I think it would be safe to say that an integral bolster is perfectly acceptable.

I believe the spirit behind this rule is to prevent applicants from submitting super simple knives with a flat blade and two scales applied. While there is certainly nothing wrong with a knife made like that (I make them myself), it does not present the challenge that this test requires nor does it show the skill needed to make knives at the JS level. I'm speaking for my estimation of that rule, not necessarily for the ABS.

I would think so, as well.

An "intergral bolster" is a bolster.

Still better check with the board to be certain.

I agree with Lin and Karl but I sent an email to Mike Wiiliams to make certain. Mike has been on the JS Judging Panel for many years and you can be certain of his ruling.

Matthew;

I think everyone agrees on the question.

The rule is in place so that the applicant must demonstrate that he/she can mount a guard/bolster properly.

One or two integrals is fine; but we do insist on showing good furniture techniques on your work.

Matt

ABS Chairman Harvey Dean got right back to me today and said that an integral knife would qualify as a JS test knife.

I want to wish you all the best in Atlanta.
