This is a video on youtube (holmanknives) of my Pre Test knife. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this, so I'm sorry if not. This knife took set at the ricasso, I did not heat treat the tang, the blade was tapered from in front of the ricasso to the tip, do you think it took set because I did not heat treat the tang? I did draw the spine back, but there was no thin spots in the blade.

Any help on why this happened?

This video is my first and the pictures are blurry. sorry

Hello Dana. Yes, that is not what we really want to see. I have some questions. When you say that you did not heat treat the tang, did you do an edge quench? or a full quench and leave the tang out? Also what is the steel? And how thick is it? And how did you put your blade in the water bath to draw the spine?

Form the way it bent it looks like your blade is soft right at the plunge area. Possibly the ricasso did not reach critical temp. Or maybe you drew it back too much. Just some thoughts.

I am sure others will have some ideas also.

Brion, the steel is 1/4" 5160. And I guess you could say I did a edge quench, it was from the back of the ricasso to about mid spine, I know the edge at the ricasso was harden but not sure of the hole ricasso, this maybe the problem

thanks Dana

I thought of something else also Dana. I noticed in the video that your blade was really stiff when you were bending. I mean they should be rather tough to bend, but yours looked different to me. How far down did you go in the water bath? In other words where did the blue stop on the blade? ALso did you use a propane torch or oxy/acetylene to draw the back? Just curious.

Along those same lines, if you have not destroyed the blade, bend the tang back slightly and move the cheater bar further down on the blade and see if the blade bends 90 degrees. This will tell if you got the heat treat for the blade right. Let me know the results.

I have not destoryed the blade to much an i'll try that. thanks for your help.
