I undersand that none of a JS candidate's knives are to made using any sort of pattern welded material, either on the blade or hardware and fasteners. Where does crucible steel stand? Is a blade made from crucible steel considered a mono-steel blade? If it is a viable option, does the candidate have to of made it themselves, or could it have been purchased?
Thank you in advance for your thoughts and feedback.
Kindest regards,
Mareko
Hello Mareko and congratulations on your forged in fire episode. Great job! In my opinion crucible steel or wootz would not be acceptable as it does show a pattern. Too much like damascus in looks. I would stick with monosteel and not take a chance. Now for MS testing it would be fine, but you would have to smelt it yourself.
Good luck

I concur with Brion. One of the main reasons that the JS rules require simple materials, including carbon steel for the blade, is so the judges can readily see that you are able to make a knife with a consistent finish. Actually 5 knives, with consistently well executed fit and finish ; the blade being hand sanded and the remainder of the knife finished to a representative level. The simple materials are your required palette to reveal to the judges that you are adept at making knives by forging and, primarily, hand working.
That is an excellent explanation.
