It dawned on me the other day that I have been eligible to take the performance test for JS rating since January. I tried to find a MS from the directory list close to my area (Central IL) but many do not have their addresses listed, and then I read there will be performance testing at this years Mid America Hammer In. I attended the one last year (my first ever) and I must say it was a revelation, it literally changed my whole trajectory. I’m planning on attending this year as well, and I would definitely like to take the performance test. My question is what exactly do I need to do in order to test at the Mid America? Thanks!
A performance test is generally an arrangement made between the "testee" and the MS overseeing the activity. Imagine if you were to go to the shop of an MS and do the test. You would first contact one and make arrangements to do so.
It would be in your interests to look at the promo for the event and contact one of the MS attendees and ask him if he would take time to oversee your test.
During the event, schedules have demonstrators pretty busy, so your test would more than likely take place outside of scheduled hammer-in time.
If you were to go to the shop of an MS you are required to provide all testing materials like 2x4s, rope, etc. When contacting one of the attending MS at the event, be sure to sort out what is needed.
This gives you a place to start.
Good luck.
Thank you so much @ Karl B Andersen, that’s the info I was looking for.
On a side note while I was looking through the list of rated smiths by state, I noticed you are also from IL…what part? I live in Decatur 😔 but that’s where the forge is so that’s where the heart is 🤣
I am half way between Kankakee and Champaign. Not that far from you.
Very cool to know that someone of your stature lives right up the road!

Just don't tell anyone I'm here. 😎
