I'm getting set to do the performance portion of my JS testing and need something clarified...
On the ABS website it states the following in regards to the bend test...
"The blade is allowed to crack at the edge on bending but not beyond approximately two thirds (2/3rds) the width of the blade."
If I'm reading this correctly it means that the blade can crack 2/3rds of the way from the edge to the spine (on a two inch wide blade a crack of approximately 1 1/4 inches would be acceptable??)
For whatever reason I have always thought that it was only 1/3 the width of the blade. Personally, I'm striving to make a blade that won't crack at all, but you never know what Mr. Murphy has install at critical moments.
Hello Rick. My understanding is that it may crack but as you said no more than 1/3 the width of the blade. I wish you luck.

Thanks Brion! I appreciate your help.
hello Rick;
No more than one third of the blade is correct. The wording is confusing but you have it right. If your heat treat and geometry is on the money it won't crack at all.
Are there any ABS rated smiths in Utah? I cant recall one off the top of my head. Some fine knifemakers in your state though.
Any more questions; give a yell.

Thanks for the confirmation Mike. I really appreciate the help! It's always good to have all your ducks in a row.
In regards to smiths in Utah.. I had this conversation with Dan Cassidy the other night and he didn't know of anyone in Utah. Who knows, maybe with some hard work and a little luck I can be the first. From what I can tell, there's going to be an ABS boom here in the next few years. I think as soon as we get a few rated Smiths and organize some hammer-ins we'll see some serious growth in this parched part of the world. I can't wait to be a part of it!
You're right, we do have a long history as well as a plethora of fine makers in this state. Unfortunately we lost Steven Rapp (to S. Carolina??) and Buster Warenski in the last few years.
Thanks again!
Rick
Hey Rick,
You might want to check out this thread over on bladeforums.com, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=629580. A few knife makers in Utah were asking the same thing.
All the best, Phil
