Robert Wright passed his physical requirement testing at my shop yesterday. The knife was 5160 steel and performed exceptionally. The blade was razor sharp, the rope just fell at his feet, no popping or hopping. Talk about a tough blade, big chips of yellow pine two by four were flying and hitting the camera. At times the blade would go so deep into the wood the blade would get stuck. He could have shaved his arms legs and head if he wanted to. The blade bent a full 90 degrees then bent back almost straight. It was a pleasure for me to sign his journeyman application. Watch out fellows we have another journeyman smith on his way. Tim Potier

Here's the blade that I used to pass the performance test. This is the same style that MS, Jim Crowell demonstrated at the Intro Class last year. All nine blades made in the school passed, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with this design, as long as I followed procedures. Jim won the cutting competition with this design.

I forged 2 blades and tested one at home before I had drawn the spine on the second blade. The first blade developed a 1/8" crack at the edge during the bend test, which would have passed, but I didn't like the crack. After some research, I decided to temper the second blade one more time, and draw the spine a bit hotter. I tested the second blade for every aspect of the test except the bend at home. It worked!

Both blades were forged from 5160, 1.50" X 1/4" stock same bar. Total length 14.75", blade 9.75", almost 2" wide, a full .25" at the spine with a slight distal taper. Handle was several layers of tape followed by two sided tape to improve the grip.
