Final Schedule for New England Hammer-In
I just received the Final Schedule for the New England Hammer-In which is set for July 15 - 17, 2011 at the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn, Maine. This is the detailed hourly schedule that is usually available on the first day of the event but Chairman Jim Batson wanted the participants to have an opportunity to see it in advance so you can better plan your personal schedule at the Hammer-In. I can certainly see why because there is an outstanding line up of instructors with new and informative demonstrations.
Jim Batson said that he is looking forward to seeing you at this years' New England Hammer-In.

Hey Dan,
The line-up looks great! as far as my demos are concerned, it would be great if participants brought by drawings or actual blades they're working on for the blade design slot and finishing and filework portions as well. This way I'll be able to give real-time and concrete suggestions to everyone. It wouldn't hurt for people to bring their own files and tools as well; that way they'll be able to try some things while I'm there to lend a hand.
It's going to be a Great Weekend for bladesmiths!!See you all there!

Thank you! You have a great idea for the participants to bring drawings, knives, and tools to your demonstrations. This is a new approach that I believe will help the participants to learn even more during your presentation.

Dan, thanks for starting this post for us, your dedication is unbelievable. As it states I will be doing a Tomahawk demo again. Many of the guys saw it after hours last year but I hope to hold their interest again. I like J.D.’s idea of bringing along their work. Possibly some gave tomahawks a try after the demo last year and may have some specific questions this year and hopefully I will be able to be helpful if anyone had problems. Making hawks is a great way to practice or hone your welding skills. I have a hands on session on Friday afternoon; I look forward to this opportunity to watch as participants enjoy forming their blades, you have to watch me though, Cindy says I take the hammer from my student to do it myself too often. As for me, I see I have some time available to see Lin Rhea’s demo and I plan to come away with a great deal more knowledge, I will even have time for J.D.’s grinding session on Sunday, this will be great. Cindy and I will see everyone in Maine on Thursday. I hope everyone has safe travels.

Butch, I plan on taking advantage of your open forge session. You're welcome to swing my hammer anytime so long as you show me some cool stuff! I'm going to make sure to see Lin's forging and J.D.'s grinding demos too. You're right, this will be GREAT!

Sorry it took me so long to reply.
I look forward to this week. I intend to do my best to show how I would make a JS test knife. We will discuss different heat sources, such as the coal and gas forges as well as using the O/A torch. I also want to compare the way we would differentially heat treat for the test to the way we might heat treat for the real world usage. Everyone be sure and read over the rules for the JS performace test so we can all have it in mind. Thank you for telling everyone about your demonstrations at the upcoming New England Hammer-In. I have attended classes by each of you and the students are in for an outstanding learning experience. We have a record number of pre-registrations so I can see the anticipation building! It will be a great Hammer-In! Phil is coming all the way from Hawaii to attend and is really looking forward to your demonstrations and some hands on experience.

I am very much looking foward to seeing you up in New England!
I think it would be a great idea for anyone attending my talk to bring knives they have been working on so we can go over any issues you might be having or if you would like your knives critiqued. There will be 2 master smiths on site that gave me great advice ten years ago...maybe we can get them to crush your soul as well!
(just kidding!....only one of them crushed my soul....and I'm a better maker for it!)
J.D. and I will be running the auction this year so please bring some items for us to sell! Anything is welcome and does not have to be knife related.
Can't wait to see old friends...and make some new ones!

Dont forget to bring a camp knife or bowie to use in the cutting demo. I'll have mine and hope to get in on the fun too. It needs a lanyard and a visible pin. Check the rules to be sure. It's been a heat index of 110 this week, so I will enjoy a break being up there. I'm getting pumped up.
The New England Hammer-In started this morning with some great bladesmithing classes. One of the highlights is the Cutting Demonstration.

Mace and the other contestants sure had their work cut out for them on the 2x4 challenge. The board was clamped such that it and the 2x6 backer was suspended over air. That had an interesting effect on the "solidity" of the material. In other words, they sure earned their chop times!
We're having lots of fun...and learning lots of stuff!
