Hello all. It is that time of year again and the Spring Piney Woods Hammer In is coming up fast.

There will be really good demonstrations, good times, and meeting your fellow makers. Also this is a very good time for aspiring JS and MS applicants to have their knives looked at before the Blade Show in Atlanta. Always a good weekend and there will also be a knife given away for paid attendees. You must be present to win and the drawing will be held Saturday afternoon after the auction.

I have the honor of making the knife for this year. Going to be a Little River hunter with pictures to come. There will be a slight change to the schedule above. I will be doing clay heat treating for hamons and Jim will be doing heat treating, probably with a torch.

Hope to see you all there.

Brion

The Hammer-In's are a great thing if:

1. You are wanting to find out about starting knifemaking and are not sure.

For those who are thinking about it but would like to have a lot of questions answered by knifemakers. You can see the real deal and how little or how much you need to invest in both sweat and cash.

Meet new guys like yourself who are looking into it and realize your are not the only one out there.

2. You want to seriously pursue the craft.

The importance of having qualified makers look over your work and give you honest and thought out critiques is priceless. To see the good points; to see the not so good and HOW TO CORRECT it.

Establishing a network of guys you know to share your ideas and problems with is hugely important. At events you see them and they see you; the internet can not replace this.

3. You need critiques of your work for a rating stamp.

The advantage of having several quality critiques of your work before Atlanta is a nice thing. The ability to have several different smiths look over your work NOW; will give you time to make any needed adjustments before you head to the testing room. There will be current and past judges at the hammer-in; use this resource!

Long winded but there!

All of you new guys and socially inept regulars: Look me and Brion up at the Best Western fri. evening and we will go get a bite to eat. Our way of saying "hi" and trying to look socially ept.

Brion Tomberlin has donated his time and skills in a very nice knife to be given away to an attendee at the Hammer-In.

You must be signed in and present to win this knife.

A big thank you to Brion!!!!!

Mike, I don't know if I will ever be socially ept, but I will keep trying. Mike has very good points guys, pretty smart man and knows what he is talking about. There is a lot of informal intstruction going on in the evenings too. Both at dinner and around the hotel. Amazing some of the tips and tricks shared in hotel rooms and out in the breezeway.

Glad to do it Mike and I will see you Friday.

Here is the knife being given away to hammer in attendees this coming weekend. Steel is 1084 with a hand rubbed finish, 416 stainless for the guard, and some exceptional walnut burl from Oklahoma (Thanks Mike}. This is my standard little river hunter design. Very light and balances right at the guard. Still needs another coat of tru oil.

See you all there.

I will now be unable to attend the hammer in. We have a family emergency which will prevent me from participating.

Best regards

Scott

Scott, I'm wishing your wife a full and speedy recovery.

I wont be able to make this hammer in. I wish I do be at all of the events but life happens. I wish you all a great time.
